KARATE
Karate classes are taught by a certified instructor from United Karate, a Christian martial arts studio. United Karate is a system of martial arts developed and systemized by Ben Kiker, who was trained in traditional Tae Kwon Do, and the United Karate organization over the past thirty-seven years. The United Karate system has deep roots in Tae Kwon Do, but is also augmented with some non-traditional elements. United Karate is one of the strongest systems in the nation. Hundreds of black belts have been trained with many who have become nationally ranked point fighters, forms competitors, weapons competitors and full contact competitors. United Karate has a local studio in Flowery Branch.
Our karate classes will teach your whole child--Body, Mind and Spirit. In addition to providing excellent physical activity and self-defense training, your child will learn how a martial artist walks with the Lord, improving self-confidence and self-esteem. Parents are expected to purchase karate uniform, belts and protective gear (if appropriate). All classes are held in the SHUMC Youth Center (adjacent to Academy building). Children will be picked up from that location.

All ability levels will be addressed in each class. The amount of practice time that a student devotes will often determine how quickly a student progresses.
PIANO 1
Piano 1 is for any student age 5 and up who is studying piano for the first time. It is a beginning class where the students learn note reading, rhythm reading, sight-reading and technical piano workouts. Students work toward an understanding of musical notation and the ability to use basic beginning piano skills. The Alfred Premier Piano Method is used and students will work to successfully complete Lesson Book 1A (and beyond, depending on individual progress). Each student is able to work at their own pace through the lesson books. The amount of practice time that a student devotes will often determine how quickly a student progresses.
PIANO 2
Piano 2 is a continuation of Piano 1. There are two requirements for Piano 2. First, students should have been playing for at least 1 full year. Second, students should have completed the majority of Alfred Premier Piano Book 2A. Evaluations can be scheduled to determine placement.

WIZKIDZ SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Grades K-2nd:
PEE WEE LOGO ENGINEERS will introduce students to a variety of hands-on enginering, robotic and LEGO educational activities structured to enhance and inspire K-2 students' involvement in science and technology. Students will participate in lunar robotic projects, learn programming using ROBO-Lab, and more.
MINI-MOVIE MAKERS will experience the world of computing and programming as they design mini-movies, virtual worlds and mini-games using SCRATCH.
Grades 3rd-5th:
JUNIOR ROBOTICS will introduce students to LEGO robotic platforms and programming languages that involve real world applications used to solve real world problems. Students learn mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills. In small teams, using motors and sensors, students explore gears and pulleys, build and control rovers, and finally build a robot that can find its own way out of a maze.
JUNIOR FORENSIC SCIENTIST will delve into the world of forensic science and discover the techniques and technology used to solve crimes. Using hands-on activities to solve mock kid-friendly crimes, students will put their newly learned detective skills to work such as fingerprint analysis, teeth print analysis, fiber and hair identification and more.
VIDEO GAME CREATION students are exposed to 3-D virtual programming with an introduction to ALICE, short for Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer Entity. ALICE is very kid-friendly teaching tool for introductory computing. It uses 3-D graphics that allow students to create their own interactive, non-violent game or video that can be shared on the web.
Grades 6th-8th:
ROBOTICS CLUB course answers the question "What's a microcontroller?" by showing students how they can design their own customized, intelligent inventions with the Parallax BASIC Stamp microcontroller module and the iRobot "Create". The activities in the course incorporate a variety of fun and interesting experiments designed to appeal to the student's imagination by using motion, light, sound and tactile feedback to introduce new concepts. The activities introduce students to a variety of basic principles in the fields of computer programming, electricity and electronics, mathematics and physics and artificial intelligence.
FORENSIC SCIENCE 101 is where students become Forensic Entomologist as they use their knowledge of insects, their life cycles and behaviors to give them clues to solve crimes.
VIDEO GAME CREATION students are exposed to the fundamentals of game creation and virtual world creation using AgentSheets. AgentSheets is a revolutionary gaming tool that lets students create their own non-violent video games and simulations and actually publish them on the web.
